Danny Maccabee (Adam Sandler) – a professional plastic surgeon works along with his assistant plastic surgeon, Katherine Murphy (Jennifer Aniston).
Murphy is a divorcee with two “bright” kids. Both Dr. Maccabee and Katherine are often seen as though they are married to each other when they are not.
One day, Dr. Maccabee met his “love at first sight” with Palmer Dodger (Brooklyn Decker) – a 6th grade math teacher. Everything was running smooth until she stump upon and found his wedding ring. Feeling upset, Maccabee tries to make up for it by creating a lie.
Creating a lie that he has no other choice but to use his assistant, Murphy, to be his “fake-soon-to-be-ex-wife”. So he decided to make her dress elegantly sexy and hot. Things got worsen after the two girls met when Murphy grab a call from her daughter.
This scene makes Palmer feel insecure and cheated, and that she feels she is destroying a beautiful when she’s “not”. Maccabee then declares that he “has” two wonderful children. Palmer is surprised of Maccabee loving kids and so does she. And she would love to meet them.
Following day, Maccabee offers Murphy’s kids to play along in return, he will give what they want. Murphy’s daughter – Maggie Murphy (Bailee Madison) wants US$ 800 per day and 3 weeks of acting classes (deal closes at US$ 300 per day and 5 weeks of acting classes) and her son Michael Murphy (Griffin Gluck) wants a trip to Hawaii to swim with the dolphins but only gets his bargain to get unlimited tokens for some arcade game (he still gets to go to Hawaii).
On the day, Maccabee brought his “family” to meet Palmer and Maggie puts up a British accent surprising Murphy and Maccabee – they have to lie that she went to a boarding school in England.
At lunch, Michael was looking very upset that his “dad” broke his promise to bring him to Hawaii – Palmer finds this outrageous. The wicked smile was hidden under his sad face leaving Maccabee without any choices but to bring everyone to Hawaii.
At the airport, it was a coincidence that Maccabee met his cousin Eddie Simms (Nick Swardson) who was running away and was also under the disguise as Dolph Lundgren – thus becoming Murphy’s lover. (Oh! By the way, Murphy’s fake name is Devlin, Maggie is Kiki Dee, Michael is Bart)
Eddie aka Dolph aka Devlin’s lover with a weird German accent said his occupation was an Austrian sheep salesman. And so, Eddie tags along with them too with Maccabee paying for his flight.
It wasn’t always a good time for Maccabee because he was not having any fun with Palmer when Eddie is always in the way.
The night in Hawaii, Murphy met her sorority girlfriend whom she has not met since high school who was the real Devlin (Nicole Kidman). Devlin is married to Ian Maxtone-Jones (Dave Matthews), claimed to have invented the iPod. Devlin invited Murphy on meet-up session to dinner. Devlin wants Murphy to confess her feelings towards Maccabee which ends up both of them confessing with honesty and sincerity.
While, Eddie took Palmer to a run-down restaurant for dinner until the village girl asked anyone who can save her sheep who has been fainted for unknown symptoms. Palmer said Eddie can help. Eddie became nervous because it was only an act. He wrestles with sheep and then suddenly start forcing its belly till it spits out a soft-toy. Eddie saved the sheep.
Murphy and Devlin participated in a hula dancing contest which ends up with a tie-breaker. But Devlin does not want a tie-breaker instead insisting for a next competition. So Danny and Ian joins the feat with their partner in a coconut rolling contest, which in the end Murphy won and Devlin furiously angry at Ian.
When Eddie and Palmer returns, they crosses path with Maccabee and she told him that she and Maccabee should get married by tomorrow. Maccabee finds this in a mixed feeling, considering that he seems to be falling in love with Murphy instead of Palmer.
The next morning, Devlin and Murphy sat together. Devlin told Murphy that she and Ian are getting the divorce papers because he admitted he is “gay”. Murphy told Devlin the truth that she and Maccabee are not married to each other. Maccabee came from behind and surprises Murphy that he wants to be with her instead of Palmer.
Murphy and Maccabee continues their vacation while Palmer moves on and met a professional tennis player.
I’m not fond of watching romantic comedy. It’s just not really my genre. But I have a friend who gave a free ticket to the cinema. So I just go ahead and watched it. It’s been awhile since I watched this genre.
Adam Sandler is funny man. But in this film, he tries so hard to not to be funny at all the time.
What actually surprised me was Nicole Kidman was a supporting cast in this film which reminds me of Tom Cruise as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. It surprises a lot.
Loving couples would find this film interesting. Predictable jokes.
